The Ultimate C-Section Guide by Maureen Connolly and Dana Sullivan is a most excellent, comprehensive source for just about any aspect of anticipating or recovering from Cesarean birth. From the interesting facts about the first known C-section (performed in the 1800s by a woman masquerading as a male doctor) to the tips on getting past the gas pains (walk, walk, walk), to the gentle strengthening exercises, this book is a must-read for anyone who just has a C; it's almost as good as having an experienced girlfriend in the hospital bed next to you. Take all the hospital days your insurance will give you, rest, nurse your baby and read this book.
—Peg Moline, Editor-in-Chief, Fit Pregnancy
A fantastic and long-awaited resource for women! Finally, a thorough, well-written, easy-to-understand resource for the more than one in four pregnant women who will undergo a c-section. From preparing for the possibility of a Cesarean delivery to recovering from the surgery, Sullivan and Connolly answer every question a woman — and even her partner — could have, and many they'd never think to ask. Their book is a satisfying combination of the latest medical information on c-sections and the real-world advice of women who've been through this experience themselves.

A must-read
Parenting/Whole 9 Months/June 2004
Cesareans occur in about one in four births in the U.S., so it’s a good idea to prepare for one. For great advice from two moms who’ve been there, check out The Essential C-Section Guide (Doubleday Broadway) by Maureen Connolly and Dana Sullivan. Especially helpful are the "Healing at Home" and "Dealing With Mixed Emotions" chapters.
C-sections happen
Fit Pregnancy/Great Reads/June 2004
Many childbirth classes do a disservice by not discussing Cesarean sections instead of preparing women for the possibility, say the authors of The Essential C-Section Guide: Pain Control, Healing at Home, Getting Your Body Back—And Everything Else You Need to Know About A Cesarean Birth. Maureen Connolly and Dana Sullivan, who’ve had five c-sections between them, give an unsettling description of the surgery but say it’s better for women to know what they face than to be caught off guard. Afterward, they advise, accept all offers of help—even delegate diaper duty. And because pain can reduce milk supply, don’t skimp on medications. This reassuring book is especially helpful for women who think having a c-section means they’ve somehow "failed." Most valuable tip: Recovery is as much an emotional process as it is physical. (Broadway Books, 2004; $14)
